The national heroine of France, Jeanne d'Arc (1412-31) sought with God's help to lead the French to victory over the English. In 1429 she accompanied the army to Orleans, and on 29 April she rode into the city. She was finally burned at the stake as a heretic.
Here, we see the visionary peasant girl humbly listening to the voice of God, telling her to save her native land from disaster. Against the background of the Franco-German war, the figure was seen as a symbol of resistance and hope, and the statue exists in numerous casts in France and all over the world.
